Recipe: Taverns

It seems like every where I go, I hear different words for taverns. They are known as taverns, charlie boys, maid rites and sloppy joes. Now, I don’t want to get all technical, but where I come from, sloppy joe and tavern or not the same thing. To me, a sloppy joe’s sauce is tomato based and taverns don’t really have a sauce to begin with.
Here is a recipe that was given to me by my Mom.

2 lbs of best ground beef (I use 97/7)
1 c water
3/4 c ketchup
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp chili powder
1 T dried minced onion
2 tsp horseradish mustard (I don’t always have this so I use any mustard I have in the fridge)

1. Boil everything except the hamburger and mustard for 7 minutes.

2. Add beef and mustard
3. Boil on medium for 30 minutes

4. Drain excess liquid and serve

We use this recipe for lots of family events like birthdays. It’s super easy and most of the time, I already have the ingredients on hand. It’s also easily doubled for the crockpot and freezes really well.
