Next fall, Jack will be in all day kindergarten. Being the planner that I am, I’ve already started getting ideas on what to pack in his lunch. He can be a picky eater and I feel is more likely to eat a full lunch if he brings it himself. One of his favorite lunch time items is milk. However, bringing milk to school may be an issue. His lunch will be non refrigerated for probably five hours before he will eat it. So my other option is juice boxes. Not exactly something I want him drinking every single day.
However, I just learned about a product called shelf safe milk. It is a milk product that lets you have milk whenever and wherever. I was skeptical at first. That was until I did the research. Watch the video below for an introduction to shelf safe milk:
To sum it up, shelf safe milk is Grade A fluid milk that requires no refrigeration until the package is opened, thanks to ultra pasteurization and special Tetra Pak cartons that preserve all the wholesome goodness of milk.
What I love about this product is that it will allow Jack to have his milk at lunch and I know that he will be the important nutrients that milk provides a growing boy. One carton of shelf safe milk has eight grams of protein and nine essential nutrients – calcium, A, D and B12, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, riboflavin, niacin and zinc. It’s real milk in a convenient package.
I will just put one in the freezer the night before and then toss in his lunch box in the morning. By the time lunch rolls around, the milk will just right for drinking. It will still be cold and safe for him. Some companies are making flavored shelf ready milk. They provide a nice variety of flavors with less added sugar then juice or pop.
Having shelf safe milk will also allow me to stock up so there is no last minute trip to the store. Since I can store on the shelf, I can start a good stockpile to ensure that we always have milk on hand. There are also other situations that having shelf safe milk will come in handy. I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve bought unhealthy beverages for road trips, picnics and day trips. I thought they were the best choice because they would not spoil. Now, I can provide a healthy alternative for Jack and still keep the fun and convenient packaging.
As a parent, I feel better knowing that just because Jack isn’t eating a meal at home, I can still provide him with a healthy beverage. He loves milk with his meals so I know he would love drinking them.
