I’ve had my dog, Bentley, for almost six years. For the first three years of his life, he was our only “kid”. Flash forward another three years we now have our 3 yr old son and Bentley. For the past year, Jack has been wanting Bentley to sleep with him. The only problem is that Bentley is pretty much hooked to my hip. He follows me everywhere and that includes the bed.
I’ve tried to get Bentley to sleep in Jack’s room. I’ve left the doors open and have even gone as far to shut him in the room. Nothing works. Bentley will sleep next to me all night and will only get up if I get up. He is my dog and I don’t think it will ever change. I will say that Bentley has gotten better about Jack. He is learning how to handle a dog and what is ok and what is not. Now, they will play together but Bentley will not sleep with him.
Recently, I let Jack skip nap time and opt for quiet time and a movie while I did some chores. Normally, Bentley would be right behind me wherever I was going. On this particular day Bentley decided that he would lay by Jack! I can honestly tell you that it was probably one of his happiest days. He was so excited he started to get up to come tell me. I quickly told him that if he got up, Bentley would to and it would be over. They laid like that all afternoon.
From then on, Jack has been making his way to our bed at night. I thought he was coming to snuggle with me and I was really happy about that because he’s becoming more independent and hugs are few and far between. Unless of course I beg. After a few nights of this, Jack was nice enough to tell me that he wasn’t coming to snuggle with me but to snuggle with Bentley.
To me, a boy and his dog if a Finer Thing.
