52 Weeks of Organizing: Container Drawer

After taking a break for “major” organizing last week, I’m back with a finished task worth writing about. For the longest time, I’ve had a drawer FULL of different plastic containers. I swear they multiply like rabbits. Anyone else have this problem?

Since having my kitchen redone due to major plumbing issues last spring, I have a deep drawer that I keep my plastic containers. Lately, it’s become difficult to close the drawer all the way because it was so unorganized and over flowing.  This week, I took the liberty to actually to get rid of containers that I don’t obviously need.

The drawer looks full now, but I even have containers that are in the fridge and the dishwasher. So, I know that I have plenty on standby.  After sorting through them, I was finding that I somehow had a surplus of lids and no containers to match! How does that happen? Again, I’m thinking it’s the  rabbit scenario.

Now, I can close the drawer fully without it jamming or containers falling back behind the drawer. Do you know how annoying it is to have to take a drawer out get containers? I’m sure if you were a fly on the wall, you would think it was a funny site to watch me. I’m not the most graceful person in the world.

As a side note, I’m starting to get the feeling that maybe my kitchen needed a lot more help than I cared to admit……

  • My tupperware multiplies at night when no one is watching as well! I always have more containers then lids though!

  • That's what I worked on this week! I always have wayyyy too much plastic. And then a lot of lids with no homes or bowls with no lids. Nothing matches!!

  • Less is definitely more when it comes to plastic. I've organized a few plastic "over-loving" homes and we ended up recycling 2 large trash bags full of unmatched, stained or broken plastic containers. Having a few quality products to store left-overs in is much better than a drawer or cabinet overfilled with unmatched containers. I personally love Pyrex dishes. They have a great line of glass bowls that have matching lids. They have a variety of sizes too.

I am finding I am using less plastic containers now that I am home, I am careful to eat leftovers quickly so there are not lots of plastic in the frig. But then it is just the two of us now. I have too many though and need to go through them too. Great job!
